Burbank Promotion
On
February 23rd, North L.A. Youth Branch held a promotion at Burbank Dojo. Anthony
Jacobsen & Brianna Rancor-Ibarra promoted to Ju Kyu. Andrew
"Ice-Man" Ibarra, Jeffrey "Punisher" Pena, &
Christen "Cannonball" Pena all promoted to Ku Kyu. All five karate-ka
performed kata, push-ups, and kumite admirably. Especially impressive were Anthony's
& Jeffrey's sparring against tournament-experienced, higher-ranked opponents.
Both young men are looking tournament ready. Freshman
Tournament
Geghard "G-Man" Arakelian,
fighting in his first tournament, won 2nd place at Pacoima on Sunday, October
7th. Fighting as a lightweight in a division with middleweight fighters, G-Man
consistent-ly outfought his opponents with strong punch combinations. He eventually
lost in the final match by the slimmest of margins, 3-2, in double overtime. In
spite of the potential controversy of the decision, Geghard showed the utmost
class, raising his opponent's hand at the end of the match. He fought and behaved
like a true champion. 4th
North Los Angeles Championships 9/15/2007
Fighters
from Burbank, Eagle Rock, Reseda, & West L.A. fought for championships in
4 categories. 6 of the 8 fighters to reach title fights were from Eagle Rock.
Our 8 fighters ultimately captured 3 titles, 3 second places, and 2 third places.

On March 2nd,
Donald "KO Kid" Kaplan and his lovely assistant, Jeremy Kaplan
"Crunch" ran the 26.2-mile Los Angeles Marathon. Donald, though
running on an injured ankle over the last 15 miles, never stopped, and was back
in karate class two days later. Congratulations, KO! Chris
"Taiko" Tokita is the Eagle Rock Gifted Magnet's Valedictorian
for the class of 2007. Maintaining a straight-A-average for 3 years, Chris regaled
his graduation audience with a rousing speech about friendship, sweat, and the
impending downfall of western civilization. Or something like that... Phelan
"Action" Jackson recently had his original art work featured
in an exhibit at the Arc Light Cinema in Hollywood. One of his dazzling paintings
depicted Japanese samurai. Upcoming
